Medical Decisions
Parents
One of the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses that is perhaps the most
dangerous to children raised in the religion of the Jehovah’s Witnesses is the prohibition on blood transfusion.
A booklet written by the Society to address the issue of blood transfusion,
medicine and the legal profession explains that for a child to violate God’s law on blood they are endangering their chances of survival in the new order of things.
“They know that if they violate God’s law on
blood and the child dies in the process, they have endangered that child’s opportunity for everlasting life in Gods new world.”
Blood, Medicine, and the Law of God, 1961, p.54
In yet another of the Watchtower’s Society’s publication’s they
explain that obedience to the commandment to abstain from blood transfusions is a fundamental principle upon which Jehovah’s Witnesses base their lives.
“Persons who recognize their dependence on the
Creator and Life-Giver should be determined to obey his commands. This is the firm position that Jehovah’s Witnesses take It is out of obedience
to the highest authority in the universe, the Creator of life, that they refuse to take blood into their systems either by eating or by transfusion. The
issue of blood for Jehovah’s Witnesses, therefore, involves the most fundamental principles on which they as Christians base their lives.”
Jehovah’s Witnesses on Blood, 1977, p. 18-19
- P S v. J S, District Court, County of. Quoting from pages 10-11 of
the Court's ruling:
· Given the choice of a good parent who has that baggage and a good parent who does not have that
baggage, the Court is inclined to choose the parent that does not have the views that would lead the parent to the conduct that would have this impact on the children.
Finally, Jehovah’s Witness parents, in the belief that they are obeying
God’s law and are being obedient to the teaching of the Watchtower Society have allowed their children to die rather than to accept a blood transfusion. The following quote demonstrates the
Society’s belief that to refuse a blood transfusion is putting God first.
“In former times thousands of youths died for
putting God first. They are still doing it, only today the drama is played out in hospitals and courtrooms, with blood transfusions the issue.” Awake, May 22, 1994, p. 2
